How We Calculate Concrete Per Post

The volume of a cylindrical post hole is:

Volume (cu ft) = π × (diameter ÷ 2 ÷ 12)² × depth (ft)
Bags needed = Volume ÷ 0.60

Example: 8-inch diameter hole, 2.5 feet deep:

  • Radius = 8 ÷ 2 = 4 inches = 0.333 ft
  • Volume = π × (0.333)² × 2.5 = 3.14159 × 0.111 × 2.5 = 0.872 cu ft
  • Bags = 0.872 ÷ 0.60 = 1.45 → round up to 2 bags

Note: this formula assumes you're filling the full hole volume. In practice, there's a 4×4 post taking up some space inside the hole. The formula slightly over-estimates, which is good — always better to have a little extra than run short.

How Deep Should Fence Post Holes Be?

The standard rule: bury at least 1/3 of the total post length.

Frost zones: In areas with hard winters, the hole must go below the local frost line — typically 36–48 inches in the northern US and Canada. Frost heave can push shallow posts out of the ground over one or two winters. Check your local frost depth before digging.

How Wide Should Post Holes Be?

The recommended hole diameter is 3 times the post width:

  • 4×4 post: 12-inch diameter hole
  • 4×6 post: 12–16 inch diameter hole
  • 6×6 post: 16-inch diameter hole

A wider hole gives the concrete more surface area to grip, improving lateral stability. In soft or sandy soil, err toward the wider end of the range and go slightly deeper.
