Editorial Policy
FenceCalculate.com publishes free fence material calculators. This page explains how we research and verify our formulas, how we keep cost data current, how we handle errors, and how we separate advertising from editorial content.
How We Research Formulas
Every calculator formula on FenceCalculate.com is based on established construction math — the same arithmetic used by fence contractors and building professionals. Our primary sources are:
- Published trade references and contractor guides
- Manufacturer installation specifications (for rail counts, post spacing, and post sizing)
- USDA and NOAA data for frost depth values
- Standard concrete bag yield data from product manufacturers (Quikrete, Sakrete)
- Local building code summaries for post depth minimums
All formulas are documented publicly on our Methodology page. If you disagree with a formula or believe we have made an error, please contact us.
How We Update Cost Data
Material cost ranges are updated at least once per year, typically in January. We compile national retail averages from publicly available home improvement retailer pricing. We show price ranges (low to high) rather than single figures to reflect regional variation.
Cost data is not sourced from paid partnerships, sponsored content, or advertiser relationships. No advertiser influences the unit prices shown in our calculators.
Labor, permit, delivery, and disposal costs are excluded from all estimates and are noted explicitly on each calculator page. Actual total project cost will exceed material estimates.
Correction Policy
We fix confirmed errors promptly. If you find a mistake — a wrong formula, an outdated price, or a factual error — please contact us with details. We will:
- Investigate the reported error within 5 business days
- Correct confirmed errors in the calculator or content
- Update the page's modification date to reflect the change
We do not silently correct errors that could have materially misled users on significant calculations. For formula corrections, we note the change and the date it was made.
Transparency About Estimates
FenceCalculate.com calculators produce estimates, not guarantees. We are transparent about this in several ways:
- Every calculator result page includes a disclaimer that results are estimates
- Our footer repeats: "Results are estimates. Always verify with your supplier and a licensed contractor for large projects."
- The Methodology page documents every formula and its known limitations
- Cost ranges are clearly marked as national averages excluding labor and permits
We never imply that our calculators replace professional consultation for permitted or structural work.
Advertising Separation
FenceCalculate.com may display Google AdSense advertisements to fund site operations. Our editorial standards are independent of advertising:
- Advertisers do not influence calculator formulas, cost data, or written content
- We do not accept paid reviews, sponsored calculator results, or affiliate-linked price data
- Ad placements are determined by Google AdSense, not by advertiser preference
- No content on this site is written to benefit a specific advertiser
If you have concerns about our advertising practices, contact us.
Scope and Limitations
FenceCalculate.com covers residential and light commercial fence material estimation. We do not cover:
- Structural or engineering-grade calculations
- Code compliance advice for specific jurisdictions
- Contractor recommendations or referrals
- Product reviews or brand comparisons
Content outside this scope is beyond our editorial mission and we do not publish it.
